The Library is an impressive timber and brick clad facade around a precast concrete frame. Brick Cutters was asked to design and supply the massive 12m hidden steel lintels to the large glass entrance and windows.
Completed in 2008, the design brief specified no sight of any apparent structural support, and no shelf support was to be allowed further up the elevations. The full load of the single skin outer leaf and planter supports was to be carried by the structural steel across openings up to 12 metres. In addition metre boxes and display features were designed with areas of brickwork apparently hanging in space with no support.
